Make registration easier...

I stopped using the registration process completely and just went with adding players directly to a roster and inviting the parent to claim the player.  Too many parent's got confused by registration and set their accounts up wrong which created even more of a mess for me.  Not only did I have to go find the player and move them to a roster from the membership, I had to get the parent's to fix their accounts so they would get messaging and be able to rsvp and use the app.

Hi Chad, I'm curious what you mean by making it easier. What kind of things did you find parents were having difficulty with?

I have had sooo many parents register themselves and not the player.  It's also a challenge for them to set up their messaging preferences and add additional players.

Personally, I think the system is cumbersome.  It should be simplified and quick to use.  Simple stuff like:

    Mother's Name:

    Mother's email address:

    Mother's cell phone number:

    Messaging preferences: email, text, both

    etc...

The system now just says "Name:" or whatever it is.  They get it wrong then it's a hassle to get it fixed because I can't do it for them.

When we first switched to Sports Engine the amount of complaints I got was unbelievable.  Everyone wanted us to go back to Team Snap.  Some of our managers did until I had to make them use Sports Engine.

I like Sports Engine and appreciate the effort that goes in to making improvements.  The system gets updated all the time.  Unfortunately, the user experience still isn't as easy as TeamSnap for roster management and messaging and League Apps for payments.

PS - I also can't track billing internally unless the parent accepts the invitation.  I should be able to track payments internally without their permission to do so.

    Chad,

I have been using registration for over 8 years and there are ways to do everything you are asking.  Including creating your own questions to ask.  Once a parent is registered, they dont have to enter information twice and you can track all financial data, discounts, scholarship funds and fees.

SE can help get those things done for you. And like I say, it will do everything you are asking.

I've been down the registration path with the help of SE the last two years
and still don't get what I'm asking for. Is there a particular person I
should be working with? What am I doing wrong?

I would not say you are doing anything wrong, the platform is setup in a very general way but can get very detailed if you need to.  It is possible that you are only dealing with the general things that you can add, and maybe you just need to dive in a little bit more and see how to add custom questions, and layers that will allow you to do what you need to do as far as registration and financials.

Again, the SE platform is very customizable and has been able to do everything from basic to very advanced registrations and financials for me.

I am forwarding this message to one of my contacts at SE that will surely be able to get you back on track.

    Chad (and Rob),

I agree with some of the comments below that there are ways to gather the info and register but based on our experience with this season's registrations, there are times parents are either confused or unable to follow directions. (Sorry parents!) We had some registrations where the parents registered themselves instead of their children (even though we labeled everything clearly as PLAYER or PARENT/GUARDIAN). There's only so much that can be done.

Even with the success we had with this year's registrations, I completely agree there needs to be a better way for Parents to create their "sub-accounts" (Household, in SE terms). Outside of a typical registration (which is likely their first interaction with a SportsEngine account), the Parent should should be able to create the child/player/participant account directly from the Household tab - not just manage the accounts created through a registration.

Since we are dealing with mostly minors, there should also be a way to mark/assign multiple "Parent" accounts as the legal guardian, emergency contact or financially responsible directly in the Household/linked accounts and this information should be available to the coaches/staff members on the Manage Teams page. Right now a parent can select the player (or create a new player) during a registration and some of that information may be auto-filled but the Parent/Guardian should also have a way to be auto-filled on the same registration. (Maybe a drop down on a specific page that allows the parent to select one of the linked accounts as the emergency contact and an opportunity to update the previously stored information if it has been updated.)
